Well this is the start!
So. I've been struggling to decide what to look into. Well... more along the lines of I had a few ideas and didn't know which to pick. At first I was thinking a bit too general, and not outside the box. I want to concentrate on my 3D skills and enjoyment of creating environment captures peoples imaginations and helps immerse them into the story.
I decided to look into how Environments can be used to enhance a games design or help with progression. After a discussion about the topic with the honorable Josh Taylor, he suggested looking towards how an environment can lead gameplay.
I started looking at some games that incorporate a style of gameplay through the use of environments. Today I looked at the iDevice and Android game, The Room. The idea behind this game is that the player must complete puzzles to uncover more of the story and "Environment", the environment being an oriental looking lockbox/safe, an in turn complete the game.
At first, it just seemed like any other puzzle game that just tosses tricky mind boggling puzzles at you, till eventually you giving in to mind-boggling bunch of god knows what that is in front of your eyes. After a while though, I started to notice that it was very different. It hooks you into the story of the boxes and what they contains pushing you forward by immersing you into the environment. A very unconventional environment at that.
The boxes themselves are the environment that you are exploring and uncovering rooms to more as you go along. Containing all the gameplay within itself, in the form of its own locks and combinations that need to be unlocked and solved to reveal more of the environment, and with that more of the story and secrets. These boxes are environment, they are the game. Constantly challenging you.
I really wish I didn't sell my iPad now, because I want to know whats inside!
